Perry was the daughter of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). The role of Jackie Harris was played by her mom in both of the two shows she starred in on Roseanne. The actress did not go on to explore acting as a profession until after she had reached the age of adulthood due to her parents being afraid of the negative consequences stress can be a cause of. Perry stated she felt nervous to be an actor at the age of 16, but she began doing shows at Northwestern University as a way to connect with people following her transfer from Boston University. After graduating Perry relocated to New York to search for TV work, landing a few roles in series like Law & Order: Criminal Intent but homesickness brought the actress back to California which is where she discovered acting work. She appeared on Broadway as a part of The Other Place with her mother in 2013. In 2015, she performed with her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. In 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family. In 2017, Perry had a minor role on ABC's thriller about politics Scandal which starred her father. She played a younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off show of CBS's The Big Bang Theory was another younger portrayal of her mother. Despite her family link to the character, she was offered the part through an audition.
